A 6-day grand tour in North Greece
Thessaloniki, is the second-largest city in Greece and, the capital of the geographic region of Macedonia. The city was founded during the Hellenistic period and, was named after the sister of Alexander the Great.
Along with its remarkable history, the city has long been known for its vibrant life: numerous cultural entertainment options (from cultural events and operas, to local lifestyle), along with vivid nightlife -having the most cafes and bars per capita, of any city in Europe, thanks to its large young population.
This package, is ideal for travellers looking for a top cultural & educational tour, with an additional aspect of religious interest.
Day 1: Arrival in Thessaloniki airport. Private transfer to the hotel, in the city center. Check-in, free time at leisure. Overnight in Thessaloniki.
Day 2: Breakfast in the hotel. Meet your tour guide and, explore the history of Thessaloniki, with style!
You will have the opportunity to admire the White Tower (main landmark of the city), the Helexpo fairgrounds, the Galerius Arch, the Rotonda monument, the Citadel and the City Walls, from where you will have a marvelous panoramic city view!
Visit also the Archaeological Museum and, make a short stop at the Saint Demetrius byzantine church, with its crypt. Conclude, with a stroll at the famous Aristotelous Square, the main commercial street with elegant shops and cafés. Free afternoon at leisure, overnight in Thessaloniki.
Day 3: Breakfast in hotel. Meet your tour guide / driver and, head to Kavala, the principal seaport of eastern Macedonia.
With a foundation dating back to the Prehistoric times, Kavala has played an important role in the history of Macedonia and, became also the first European city to accept Christianity, after the visit of Apostle Paul.
Conclude the city tour and, head to the nearby Philippi, where you will see the famous Amphitheatre, ruins of early Christian basilicas and the baptizing place of Lydia. Return drive to Thessaloniki, overnight.
Day 4: Breakfast in hotel. Together with your guide / driver, depart to visit Vergina, the city of the Royal Tombs of Macedonian kings -among which, the tomb of Phillip II, father of Alexander the Great.
Continue to Pella, the first capital of the Macedonian state from the late 5th / early 4th century BC, as well as the birthplace of Alexander the Great. Admire the archaeological site with the extensive Macedonian excavations, containing an excellent collection of marbles, mosaics and terracotta statuettes unearthed here. Return drive to Thessaloniki, free afternoon at leisure and, overnight.
Day 5: Breakfast in hotel and, free day at leisure. Optionally, visit Dion, located at the foot of Mount Olympus. Dion is best known for its great, ancient Macedonian city and sanctuary of Zeus, much of which is visible in the Archaeological site and Museum of Dion.
For the last evening in Thessaloniki, a “must do” is a visit to Ladadika area, situated near the Port of Thessaloniki, being for centuries one of the most important market places of the city.
Nowadays, having undergone gentrification in the 1980s, Ladadika forms the entertainment district of the city, hosting bars, nightclubs, restaurants and pubs, in what used to be old oil stores and merchant warehouses, which spill out into a network of pedestrianized streets and small squares.
Day 6: Breakfast in hotel, check-out. Departure transfer to the airport of Thessaloniki, for the flight back home.
