11 Nov Corinth & Nafplion
Live your myth in Greece – 5 days to north Peloponnese:
Acrocorinth, Stymfalia, Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidavros
Both cities of Corinth and Nafplio belong to the peninsula of Peloponnese and are major historic cities. Visit Corinth, a Roman imperial colony and the capital of Achaia province (territories of the Peloponnese and Central Greece), where you will see its wonderful sites, step on the bema of St. Paul; then head to Naflpio, the first capital of modern Greece, to explore Mycenae and Epidavros, for the rest of your stay.
Day 1: Arrival to the Athens airport. Private transfer to your hotel, in the Athens center; check-in and break free time, or, depending on your flight schedule, tour the city of Athens and the Acropolis. Overnight in Athens.
Day 2: Breakfast at the hotel. Check-out; car rental pick-up in order to head to Corinth. On the way, you may visit the Dafni byzantine temple from 11th century and/or Elefsina, the hometown of goddess Dimitra, where the so called Elefsinia rituals were taking place in antiquity. After ½ hour’ drive, reach Isthmos, to see the Corinth canal. Take a right turn to reach Loutraki, a town on the waterfront of the Corith Gulf, famous for its spring baths; get a quick snack, your café/juice at Loutraki with a visit at the archaeological site of Eraion and the so-called lake.
Optionally, as an extra mythical place, you can visit Ancient Corinth. The temple of Apollo, the sanctuaries of Asklipios (mythical father of medicine) and godess Dimitra, the fountain, the roman Odeon and, of course, the later bema of Saint Paul, are only some of the findings the visitor can cherish.
Tour around the magnificent site of Acrocorinth, the worship center
of Afrodite. Continue to Lake Stymfalia – wetlands nowadays, with its so-called museum, where Hercules’ sixth labour took place: to kill the Stymfalian birds, huge and extraordinary, with dreadful
beacks. Today’s wetland is an important stopover to migratory birds.
Head to Nemea, visit the so-called Nemea Lion and visit a local winery, for wine tasting and meze (appetizers/quick snack). Continue to Nafplio, overnight at the hotel.
Day 3: Breakfast at the hotel. Start your day with a drive to Epidavros. A large kingdom during the Mycenean period, the most important harbour in the Peloponnese, thanks to its strategic position to Athens, Argos, Corinth, Aegina, Nafplion and Troizina. Visit the ancient theater to sense and experience one of the most well-preserved ancient theaters and its exquisite acoustics.
Then, visit the archaeological sites of Mycenae and Tiryns, the imposing ruins of the two greatest cities of the Mycenaean civilization, dominating the eastern Mediterranean world from the 15th to the 12th century B.C. These two cities are linked to the Homeric epics, the Iliad and the Odyssey, which have influenced European art and literature for more than three millennia.
The architecture and design of Mycenae and Tiryns, such as the Lion Gate and the Treasury of Atreus and the walls of Tiryns, are outstanding examples of human creative genius.
Return to Nafplio. Free afternoon, overnight.
Day 4: Breakfast at the hotel and free day -at last!
